Over 900 million people worldwide live in mountain areas. Mountains are considered the water towers of the world and supply half the world's population with fresh water. Through applied and transdisciplinary research, the Eurac Research GLOMOS programme, in alliance with UNU-EHS, contributes to the conservation of natural and economic resources and consequently, the livelihoods of mountain areas.

Center for Global Mountain Safeguard Research
GLOMOS (Global Mountain Safeguard Research) is the joint research program of Eurac Research and the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security UNU-EHS based in Bonn. Our GLOMOS Centre hosts the GLOMOS office in Bolzano, making it not only the first official UN office in South Tyrol, but also the only United Nations University (UNU) duty station in Italy.
Highlands and lowlands form a close interrelationship, in terms of their ecosystems as well as in terms of economic developments. GLOMOS investigates these interrelationships, analyses existing and emerging challenges such as climate risks and increasing mobility and develops nature-based and sustainable solutions for mountain regions. The aim of our research is to support mountain populations worldwide to become more resilient to natural and man-made hazards and disaster risks and to preserve the richness of biological and cultural diversity in the mountains. We promote the elaboration of adaptation strategies for sustainable transformation processes within these highly sensitive socio-ecological systems.
Our internationally staffed team advocates with their scientifically sound recommendations for greater consideration of mountain aspects in global policy-making processes, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
